If you’re looking for a festive quilt project to show off your favourite Christmas fabrics, this Present Block Quilt is a joy to make! I designed this quilt using the Jewelled Christmas collection — a rich, sparkling mix of prints that blend traditional festive colours with a modern twist.
Each block looks like a wrapped gift, complete with a ribbon and bow, so the finished quilt feels like a patchwork pile of presents under the tree. It measures 51" square, making it the perfect size for a seasonal throw on the sofa..
If you’d like to sew along with me, I’ve shared the full video tutorial on my YouTube channel where I walk through the process step-by-step, including some cutting tips and my layout suggestions. You can watch it here:

🪡Sewing the Quilt Top
Flying Geese 4 in 1 method
Sew the bow first, the quilting term is flying geese. This method will create 4 in 1.
Lay two smaller squares right sides together on opposite corners. Mark the centre with a crease or dissolvable pen.

Sew 1/4" either side of the centre. Cut down the centre. Press to the dark shade.

Fold the 2.75" square in half to find the centre point and place it in the corner of each of the two pieces as shown below. Sew 1/4" either side of the line.

Cut down the crease. Press to the darker fabric.

Flying Geese Sewing One Method
This method will create one bow.
Cut one 5" x 2.75" in white and two 2.75" squares in the ribbon colour.

Fold the squares in half diagonally to make a crease down the centre. Place the square to one side of the rectangle and sew down the crease.

Trim the corner. Press to the darker fabric.

Place the remaining square on the opposite side and repeat.

Sew the Rest of the Block
Sew the columns together with the ribbon colour sandwiched between two wrapping pieces. Press to the darker fabric.

Sew the 7.5" ribbon between the two columns. The ribbon will be shorter, don't worry we will trim this later. Press to the darker fabrics.

Sew the 3" white pieces either side of the flying geese.

Sew the present square to the ribbon. Press.

Trim to 9.5"

Repeat this method for all the block combinations in your quilt. My finished size was based on 4x4 blocks, 16 in total.
Lay the blocks out in a combination that makes you happy!

Adding Sashing
Add 2" wide sashing in white to the side and the bottom of the blocks as shown below. I have cut full bolt widths of white, chain stitched them, and then trimmed them afterwards. This makes more sense in my video!

Add a 2" white border to the remaining three sides.
Add another 4" border in the Berry Mistletoe.

The finished quilt top measures 51" square — a manageable size that still has a big festive impact. I love how the mix of reds and teals from the Jewelled Christmas fabrics make the “presents” pop!
I haven't decided how to finish quilting mine yet but I will add the finished quilt images when I have them!
