Felt Christmas Decorations

Updated: Dec 6, 2020

Each year I like to make a few new homemade decorations and buy a few that exceed my crafty skills. I have made some little demo videos and/or tutorials on how to make some cute tree decorations including a felt Christmas Tree, Snowman, Penguin and a Bird.

I made these ones years ago but I have recreated them for you in these short videos.

CHRISTMAS TREE

You will need:

  • Red felt

  • Green felt

  • 5 buttons

  • 12cm ribbon

  • Stuffing

  • Needle and thread

1. Cut out your green felt into a tree triangle. I have used pinking shears on the green. In the red, cut it slightly bigger and add a pot for it to stand in.

2. Play around with your buttons until you are happy with the arrangement, sew the buttons onto the green felt.

3. Place the green on top of the red and use a running stitch around the edge. When you get an inch or so from the top, place your piece of ribbon, folded in half, between the two layers and ensure you sew through all the layers so it is secured.

4. While there is still a small opening, stuff your decoration and then continue to sew the opening.

HEART

You will need:

  • Calico fabric

  • Red heart fabric

  • Piece of ribbon

  • String

  • Needle & red thread

  • Stuffing

1. Cut out two calico hearts.

2. Cut out your red hearts.

3. Using a blanket stitch, stitch your heart to the centre of the calico hearts.

4. With wrong sides together, place hearts together. You may need to pin in place.

5. Using a running stitch, stitch the two hearts together. When you get to the top centre of the heart, place the folded in half string in and ensure you sew through all layers to secure it. Leave an opening to stuff your heart and then sew the opening.

6. Tie a piece of ribbon around the string.

PENGUIN

You will need:

  • Black felt

  • White felt

  • Orange felt

  • Needle and black or grey thread

  • Stuffing

  • Ribbon

1. Cut out your felt as per the image (or email me and I will be happy to send you the template).

2. Sew the beak to the white felt first.

3. Do a french knot for eyes on the white, just above the beak.

4. Using a running stitch, attach the white tummy to one of the black pieces of felt.

5. Sandwich the orange feet in-between the two pieces of black felt and sew together with a running stitch. Make sure you place your ribbon, folded in half, in the top centre and ensure it is secure when you stitch along it. Leave a gap to stuff your penguin before you reach the end.

BIRD

You will need:

  • Grey felt

  • White felt

  • Needle and red thread

  • Stuffing

  • Ribbon

1. Cut out your felt .

2. Sew the circle to the bird first using a running stitch. I have added a star to the centre but you could also add a button or charm.

3. Create a french knot for eye.

4. I have used a decorative chain stitch around the circle.

5. Sew the two bird pieces together with a running stitch. Make sure you place your ribbon, folded in half, in the top centre and ensure it is secure when you stitch along it. Leave a gap to stuff your bird before you reach the end.

SNOWMAN

You will need:

  • White felt

  • Needle and blue and black thread

  • Carrot nose button

  • Stuffing

  • Ribbon or ric rac

1. Cut out your felt.

2. Sew the carrot button to the centre of one of the circles.

3. Create eyes using a French knot or buttons.

4. I recreated the coal for mouth look with more French knots in a smile shape.

5. Sew the two circles together using a blanket stitch. Make sure you place the ribbon, folded in half, in the top centre between the two circles and sew it into place. Leave an opening before you reach the end to stuff your snowman.
